Angkor Wat International Half-Marathon

December 2013

Team TCRP returned to the hallowed temple grounds of Angkor Wat for the second year to once again put their mettle toward a worthy cause.

Field Notes

After weeks of hard-earned training, our team of 38 Catalysts tackled the scenic route with all-around strong showings in the 21K, 10K and 3K categories. Many of our Catalysts were returnees from last year’s team, who have continued their fight against human trafficking with their athletic and fundraising abilities.

TCRP extended its commitment to its local partner Sala Bai, a hotel and restaurant school founded by the French NGO Agir pour le Cambodge. Each year the school enrolls 100 young disadvantaged Cambodians (comprised mostly of women) in a 12-month vocational training program at no cost to the student. Upon graduation, students are placed in permanent jobs in the bourgeoning hospitality industry, many earning up to six times the average national household income.

Funds Raised

This year’s team set out to raise $40,000 to help expand Sala Bai’s outreach and curriculum. Currently in their 11th year of operation, Sala Bai is looking to build a permanent campus in Siem Reap and increase their annual student intake from 100 to 150 by 2015. This effort would not be possible without the support of hundreds of donors from around the world.

Of special note this year are two of TCRP’s youngest-ever Catalysts, Mikael (8 years-old) and Baxter (10 years-old.) These two intrepid youngsters were inspiration for the rest of the team as they pushed themselves to complete the 10K and 3K races respectively. In the words of Baxter, “’X-boxes are fun, but this is what it’s all about’. Kudos to our junior Catalysts! We couldn’t be any prouder.

" I’m glad to have TCRP as a milestone in Mikael’s growing up, for providing him a Christmas gift that money cannot buy – an experience in life’s lessons.

TCRP has given junior many invaluable lessons in life. For example, training hard to race easy – 10km for an 8-year-old takes determination and perseverance. Understanding the challenges of helping a cause – donations require a lot of persuasion and also appreciating what we have and helping those who have less."
