SUMMARY:TCRP 2016: NEPAL
DESCRIPTION:This October\, in partnership with Mercy Relief and Kenneth Koh (The North Face Athlete & Singapore's Adventure Nomad)\, embark on an adventure through the flower scattered alpine meadows of the Langtang Valley and along the way discover the majestic landscapes of the Great Himalayan Range. Sought out by thousands of trekkers from all around the world\, Langtang Valley is the third-most popular area for trekkers in Nepal after the Everest and Annapurna regions.\n\nOn April 25\, 2015\, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal at 11:56am. Weeks later\, a second tremor hit and obliterated the country. Langtang was tagged the 'worst-affected' village in Nepal. More than 300 people\, including 43 foreigners\, died when the tranquil Langtang valley was destroyed. Almost a year on\, more than 100 bodies have yet to be recovered but the village is slowly crawling back to its feet. About 4 per cent of largely rural Nepal's gross domestic product comes from tourism. It provides one of the world's poorest countries with 3.5 per cent of its jobs.\n\nTCRP hopes to support the Nepali community by engaging local businesses and promoting tourism to the region through our adventure.\n\n"We Langtangpas have got to help ourselves to rebuild as soon as we can. We need the tourists to come. If Langtang rises again\, we hope that it will galvanise the whole nation to stand up for itself as it will symbolise hope for the future." - Suppa Lama\, Guest house Worker\n\nIn the wake of last year's disaster that claimed almost 9\,000 lives and left over 4\,000\,000 homeless - head out to the districts with Mercy Relief to learn more about their efforts on the ground and witness the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Nepali people.\n\nEstablished in 2003 to respond to human tragedies and disasters in Asia Pacific\, Mercy Relief is Singapore’s largest independent humanitarian charity with leadership\, expertise\, volunteers and an affiliate network that provides timely and effective aid across the entire disaster management cycle.\n\n(Source: Straits Times / Special Report - Nepal quake: One year on\, Nepal is shaken but not broken)
